History of Holy Family Church, Tarulia 1st Lane, Krishnapur, New Town, Kolkata
Holy Family Church, located at Tarulia 1st Lane, Krishnapur, New Town, Kolkata, West Bengal, under the Diocese of Calcutta, has a rich and inspiring history rooted in the growth of the Christian community in the region. It serves as a spiritual home to many, offering a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach.
In March 1892, Father Deprins from Raghapur responded to the request of local residents by visiting Kestopur. By August of that same year, a small chapel was built, marking the humble beginnings of what would become Holy Family Church. Over the years, the church developed as a substation under various parishes. In 1905, it was overseen by St. Teresa’s, which was linked to Morapai. Later, in 1909, it became part of Sacred Heart Parish, followed by regular visits from Dum Dum in 1912. The substation alternated between Sacred Heart Parish, St. Teresa’s, Dum Dum, and St. Xavier’s College, though it remained a part of Dum Dum parish throughout.
By 1998, as the congregation grew, a new church building was constructed. This was followed by the establishment of a priest’s residence and a school in 2000, marking significant milestones in the church’s development. That same year, the parish was officially established and entrusted to the care of the Capuchin Fathers (OFM Cap).
With the growing Christian population in the area, the need for a permanent, larger structure became apparent. The new church building, supported by the Diocese of Calcutta and the dedication of the local community, became the center of spiritual life in the region.
Beyond its role as a place of worship, Holy Family Church has been instrumental in serving the broader community. It has initiated educational programs, charity drives, and social services aimed at supporting the underprivileged. The addition of a school and other facilities over the years has further strengthened its position as a vital community hub, offering both spiritual guidance and practical assistance.
Throughout its history, Holy Family Church has benefited from the strong leadership of its priests and lay members, who have worked tirelessly to nurture the faith and uphold the church’s mission of service. Today, it stands as a beacon of hope, love, and unity, embodying the teachings of Christ.
As part of the Diocese of Calcutta, Holy Family Church continues to thrive as a spiritual center for the faithful, providing regular Mass, sacraments, and community activities. Its legacy is one of devotion, service, and commitment to the Gospel, and it remains an enduring symbol of faith in Krishnapur and New Town, Kolkata.
